Last summer, I planted two pots of lilium. I was disappointed, but not surprised, when they apparently died before the end of summer. We live in a very harsh climate, and I am mildly astonished when plants survive both the conditions and my lackadaisical care. This spring I thought “that’s a pretty weed” then realized the lilium had come back. This is the red variety that I planted; the white variety has buds that have not yet opened. Isn’t it gorgeous?

One of the neat things about the Western Museum of Mining and Industry is that one can actually see some of the equipment in operation. This jack hammer was demonstrated by the docent. We put our hands over our ears.
