Let’s Hear it for the Rovers
The mission of the Mars Rovers, which was supposed to last several months, has been extended yet again in the fifth extension in three years.
Sheila’s Surprise
This morning, I was taking a bath when Sheila pushed open the door. She likes to watch me take baths, so I didn’t think too much of it until I looked over and saw that she had a mouse dangling from her mouth. I was tactless enough to scream, and she left in a hurry, fortunately taking the mouse with her.
In principal, I approve of cats catching mice, but in practice, I hate dealing with the results.
Sheila Returns

Sheila has returned for a two week visit while her person takes a vacation to Peru. She is still a small cat, but takes up a lot more room on the chair than she did when she visited this summer.

Yesterday I saw this day-lily near the Post Office. Today, I looked out and it was snowing.

Today I made a pot roast recipe based on several different recipes found in our cookbooks and online. It turned out so well that I decided to write it down as Yummy Crockpot Roast.

Unfortunately, high winds kept the Evening Glow from happening Saturday at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, but we were able to watch the fireworks.
Darth Vader at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

We knew that my young nephew was really looking forward to the Darth Vader balloon. As we walked down to the field from the parking lot for the mass ascension, we saw the Darth Vader balloon take off. My nephew started to cry: he had evidently expected to take a ride in the balloon, and couldn’t understand why it was leaving without him. It took a while for his Mom to console him.
An American Hero
The obituary for my father-in-law, John Heneghan, appeared in the Washington Post yesterday. Although I knew he had been been involved in promoting civil rights in the south in the sixties, I had never realized he had been part of the Freedom Summer in 1964.
