Speckles (April 1987 - February 2003)
A little less than two weeks ago, Speckles started showing signs of illness. My vet said she was very ill when she came out two days later, and lab results indicated a failing liver. Although palliative care helped her briefly, she stopped eating again last Friday and was unable to keep more than a little water down. This morning, before Speckles became absolutely miserable again, my vet euthanised her.We acquired Speckles and Banshee, her mother, via my vet in Texas who dragged me into her back room to show me two young and beautiful cats that she had been told to euthanise because the elderly owner was overwhelmed with caring for her terminally ill husband. After a bizarre conversation with the owner, in which she told me her husband was like Adolph Hitler, Banshee and Speckles came home to live with us. Banshee died when she developed diabetes at the age of twelve, but Speckles never suffered a day's illness until two weeks ago.

More snow than we have seen in a year or so. Highs today in the teens (Fahrenheit). Last night, when I fed the horses, I pulled off my glove and checked their chests to make sure they weren't cold. They seemed to be fine so I didn't have to dig out their blankets.

We had another light snow fall last night. There was no wind, so the snow fell evenly. It was twelve degrees Fahrenheit when I took this photo at 6:45 am. For some reason, the dogs didn't want to go out. The horses are playing in the horse field: very entertaining considering Smoke and Rags are staid old horses of 26 and 18 years respectively.
