I have always been fascinated by the small cottage in our neighborhood, shown in this photo taken this morning. Apparently abandoned, it looks much older than most of the structures in the area.

A cool photo taken of a horse's eye. A friend sent me the link to this one.
After a leisurely morning of sleeping in, opening presents, and taking photos of each other in our new garb, Jack and I headed over to my trainer's for Christmas Day dinner.
My friend found these antlers at a dollar store. They light up and play music, as well. Sadly, they were all gone when she went back to get more. horsetrailer.jpg This cookie jar, given to my trainer by one of her riders, gets my award as most unusual Christmas gift. The woman said she bought it because it reminded her of my trainer's horse trailer. risotto.jpg My trainer, preparing the risotto. We also had salmon with mousseline sauce , salad, and roasted vegetables. Later, much later, we had the dessert course of rum cake and pumpkin pie. newt.jpg Newt, on the back of his favorite chair. santahorse.jpg Everything gets decorated at my trainer's house. brody.jpg Brody and my trainer.

Moon setting behind one of our trees, which was frosted by an ice fog last night.

The first winter we had horses at home, the horses drove me crazy by standing out in the snow rather than in the small cozy barn we had built for them. Can you see the snow on Smoke's back in this long range shot? Since then I have learned that when the winds get strong they will take shelter, so I no longer worry.

A gloomy December morning. Snow showers are predicted for today, which means just enough snow to make the roads treacherous. I cleaned out my Subaru Forrester so Jack could drive it to work. Usually Jack finds the Toyota Camry more comfortable to drive, but the Subaru has all wheel drive.

I enjoyed the The Two Towers, despite the many significant departures from the plot line in the books. I was surprised to see so many changes, considering how closely the first movie followed the first book.
Yesterday, Jack picked up the tickets for us to see The Two Towers this morning. This makes it a two movie year for me, since we saw Harry Potter the day after Thanksgiving.

I love the concept of stellar nurseries, as shown in this NASA Astronomy Photo of the Day.

The other day, I met Lody's breeder for the first time in a year when a group of friends met for lunch. She brought me Lody's papers, and I discovered that I have been spelling her name wrong all this time. Here she is: Ch Wild Winds Lody. The names of pedigree dogs crack me up: her sire was Ch Nickado's Wild Wind Wonder and her dam was Wild Wind's Pineacres Debut. She is laying on freshly cleaned carpet. I borrowed a friend's Bissell steam cleaner, and am now cleaning everything that will stand still long enough.
Jack tells me that the Tri Lakes area I mentioned yesterday is actually further north than the next valley beside us. The Tri Lakes area is comprised of Monument, Palmer, and Woodmore. The valley due north of us contains a "lake" belonging to Forest Lakes development, and I don't know if it has an actual name.

The area we live in is called the Tri-Lakes area, and this is one of the lakes (probably Bristlecone). It came in very handy this past summer, because this is where the helicopters went to get water during our wildfires this summer. You can see a skin of ice in areas, and how low it is due to the drought.

I took this one Sunday afternoon, looking south towards Cheyenne Mountain from my trainer's.

This week, when I posted the photo of the Launceston snow monkeys, I discovered that there had been a controversy about keeping them since some of them are carriers of a herpes virus that can potentially kill human beings. However, the Launceston council decided to keep their monkeys, and upgrade the facilities so that it would be safer for their handlers to care for them. I love how this article describes the monkeys as being so excited by their new habitat they refused to go in for dinner.
This week, I read Issola by Steven Brust , which was just released in paperback. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed his work, and picked up a copy of Five Hundred Years After when I was in a used book store, and read that as well. I like Five Hundred Years After much more than I remembered liking its prequel: The Phoenix Guards.
