Elaine,
I just logged onto your website to see the photos of Mia (she is very cute!) and found your eulogy on Smoke. Needless to say, I was moved to tears. I will always remember Smoke with great fondness. He was a tough guy with a great sense of self-preservation and his only “hole” was his claustrophobia.
When I bought Smoke, I think he was 12 or 13. He was about 300 lbs under weight and his stablemate, Mai-Tai, was almost dead. I knew that Smoke would survive, but the fact that Mai-tai survived, was a miracle that I have always attributed to the love, caring nature and fierce devotion to animal welfare of all of my friends at the barn!

Smoke was as stoic a horse as I have ever known, steady and unflappable. I believe that he had good care early in his life, then a two year period of neglect that resulted in him coming to our barn. All the subsequent good care he received with you and Jack resulted in a long and healthy life for this great horse!

awww, Elaine – I am ever so sorry to read about Smoke. I remember him fondly from the one time I met him – two years ago was it? I fell instantly in love with him the moment I laid eyes on him. Can’t say I “knew” him, but I’ll miss hearing you talk about him. Be kind to yourselves as you are grieving him.

Elaine, what a lovely picture of Smoke! So sorry that you had to make the decision to put him down, but so glad for him that he was at home amongst friends and carrots when it occurred, and that he could go with dignity to horse heaven. Has his absence been noted by the other horses? I’m sure they’ll miss his company, too.

Elaine, I was so sorry to hear about Smoke’s death. Your eulogy, however, and his beautiful photo, are a memorial to a great horse. I am sorry for your loss. Sigh!
